MODULE 1 · LESSON 1 / 4

Why patents are an innovation signal

8 min read · Patent Fundamentals

A patent is not just a legal document

For most professionals, a patent means legal protection: a company files a patent to prevent competitors from copying an invention. That is correct — but it is only the visible layer.

Beneath that legal layer lies something far more powerful for innovation professionals: a signal of genuine R&D investment.

When a company files a patent, it involuntarily reveals three things:

It is genuinely investing in this technology

Filing costs range from 5,000 to 50,000 EUR. Nobody files by accident.

It believes the technology has commercial value

Otherwise, why pay to protect it?

It anticipates a market

Patents are typically filed well before product launch — a directional signal that precedes public announcements.

Patent search vs patent intelligence

Bloomberg does not just tell you a stock price — it tells you whether the market is accelerating, who controls positions, and what the risk signal is. That is the difference between data and intelligence.

The same applies to patents:

PATENT SEARCH

  • Find patents by keyword
  • Check prior art
  • Identify a patent holder
  • Tool for: jurists, examiners

PATENT INTELLIGENCE

  • Measure innovation velocity (Momentum Index™)
  • Identify the technology phase (Lifecycle Position™)
  • Evaluate player concentration (Openness Score™)
  • Decide: INVEST / MONITOR / EXPLORE / AVOID
  • With low evidence_certainty, verdicts may surface as directional labels (MIXED_SIGNAL, WEAK_SIGNAL) or be withheld as INSUFFICIENT_DATA — Layer C (see Lesson 5)

The informational advantage: the patent signal

There is a legal delay between a patent filing and its publication: 18 months. During that period, the patent is confidential. Once published, it becomes public and analyzable.

Direct consequence: when a press article announces that a company is "entering a new market," patent data often shows that the company was filing patents 2 to 4 years earlier.

Bloomberg analogy: Bloomberg transforms price feeds into market signals. Stratensight transforms patent filing feeds into innovation signals. In both cases, the value is not in the raw data — it is in the interpretation.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • ✓A patent is an R&D investment signal, not just a legal document.
  • ✓Patent intelligence reveals who is genuinely investing in what, and at what speed.
  • ✓Patent data can provide a directional signal about R&D investment trends, often preceding public announcements.

QUIZ DE VALIDATION

1. Why are patent filings considered a leading indicator of R&D investment?

2. What is the legal delay between a patent filing and its publication?

3. What is the key difference between patent search and patent intelligence?

4. What happens in Stratensight when a dataset contains fewer than 50 patents?

5. Patent data can provide an early signal about R&D investment trends because:
