Explorer = real-time signal
The Explorer queries live patent databases. Results may change as new patents are published. This is not a flaw — it means you are seeing the most current signal.
However, this means two analyses of the same technology, run weeks apart, may produce slightly different scores. For reproducible, dated analysis, use the upload feature with a curated dataset.
Four analytical principles
These principles apply to every Stratensight analysis — Explorer or upload. They define the boundaries of what patent intelligence can and cannot tell you.
Patent signal does not equal business success.
A technology with INVEST verdict may still fail commercially due to regulatory, market, or execution factors outside patent data.
Growth does not imply defensibility.
High Momentum Index™ shows innovation velocity, not competitive protection. An OPEN market with HIGH momentum means many players are entering — not that entry is easy.
Openness and whitespace are different concepts.
Openness measures player concentration. Whitespace identifies under-explored sub-domains. A DOMINATED market can have whitespace in niche areas.
Dataset quality impacts interpretation certainty.
Intelligence Grade™ quantifies this. A HIGH momentum score on a LOW grade dataset is unreliable. Always check the Grade first.
Known limits of patent intelligence
Understanding what patent data cannot tell you is as important as understanding what it can. Here are the limits:

Module 3 complete
You now understand how the Explorer works: CPC mapping, geographic coverage, warnings, reproducibility, and the analytical limits of patent intelligence.
Key takeaways
- Explorer results are real-time signals that may shift as new patents are published.
- Four analytical principles: signal ≠ success, growth ≠ defensibility, openness ≠ whitespace, quality ≠ certainty.
- Patent data has known limits: trade secrets, industry variation, and the 18-month publication delay.
- For reproducible analyses, use dated uploads with curated datasets.
QUIZ DE VALIDATION
1. Why can Explorer results change between two analyses of the same technology?
2. What are the key analytical principles that apply to all Stratensight analyses?
3. What is the difference between 'openness' and 'whitespace' in patent analysis?
4. When presenting Explorer results to a decision-maker, what caveat should you always include?
5. Which statement about Stratensight's analytical limits is correct?
