MODULE 4 · LESSON 4 / 4
Portfolio Positioning™ — Mapping client IP against the market
12 min read
What is Portfolio Positioning™?
Portfolio Positioning™ lets you upload a client’s patent portfolio and instantly map it against the technology clusters of any market analysis. The same dataset that produced the four scores is now read through the lens of a specific client’s filings — a market analysis becomes a client-specific strategic brief.
The three readings
Every cluster falls into one of three categories once a client portfolio is mapped. Each category translates into a distinct strategic recommendation.
Strong presence
Client has significant filings in this cluster. Established position — monitor for competitor encroachment.
Weak presence
Client has some filings but is underrepresented. Potential to strengthen IP position in a growing area.
No presence
Zero client filings in this cluster. Whitespace opportunity — assess whether strategic entry is warranted.
Preparing the portfolio file
From mapping to recommendation
A worked example brings the three readings together. Same analysis, same dataset — but the client’s portfolio reframes the entire output as a filing brief.
Technology
Solid-State Batteries
Client
Mid-size automotive supplier
Cluster « Electrolyte Materials » — ★ 3 / 340 filings
Client is severely underrepresented in a high-momentum cluster.
Cluster « Separator Technology » — ★ 0 / 89 filings
Pure whitespace — no client IP in a growing technical area.
RECOMMENDATION
Prioritise filing programme in Separator Technology before competitors consolidate this cluster. Strengthen Electrolyte Materials in parallel.
Key insight
Portfolio Positioning™ transforms a patent analysis into a client-specific strategic brief. The whitespace gaps become filing recommendations. The cluster strengths become defensibility assets.
QUIZ DE VALIDATION
1. A client has 0 filings in a fast-growing cluster. What does Portfolio Positioning™ flag this as?
2. Which file format is required for Portfolio Positioning™?
3. A client has 45/89 filings in a cluster. What is the most strategic reading?
