Coverage tiers in the Explorer
The Explorer uses open data sources (primarily EPO Open Patent Services). Coverage varies significantly by patent office. Understanding these tiers is essential for interpreting your analysis correctly.
EP, US, PCT (WO)Full coverage of international filings. Most reliable for global technology mapping.
Scores reflect international activity accurately.
CN, JP, KROnly filings entering the international system (PCT, EP routes). Domestic-only filings may be missing.
May undercount assignees active primarily in domestic markets.
IN, TR, BROnly international filings visible. Domestic patent activity is largely uncovered.
Use premium sources for technologies with significant IN/TR/BR activity.
Impact on scores
Geographic coverage gaps can affect every score in a Stratensight analysis. Here is how each score is impacted:
Momentum Index™
Missing domestic filings may undercount recent activity, potentially showing lower momentum than reality.
Lifecycle Position™
Fewer data points may shift the S-curve detection, especially if early-phase filings are missing.
Openness Score™
Missing assignees can make the market appear less concentrated than it is — a domestic giant might be invisible.
Intelligence Grade™
Incomplete coverage directly reduces the Grade — the system detects and penalizes data gaps.
When the Explorer is sufficient
The Explorer provides reliable directional signals in many scenarios. You do not always need a premium upload:
EPO indexation delay — recent filings & CAGR
Recent patent filings (< 18 months) may not yet be fully indexed by the EPO. CAGR computed on such a short window can appear negative even while the market is actually growing. When this happens Stratensight displays a warning flag CAGR_INDEXATION_RISK and recommends extending the analysis period.
Les brevets récents (<18 mois) peuvent ne pas être indexés. Le CAGR peut sembler négatif sur cette période.
Technology Maturity Priors — Lifecycle Position™
For well-established commercial technologies such as Wind Energy, Hydrogen Fuel Cells, Solar PV, Lithium-Ion Batteries, 5G or CRISPR, Stratensight automatically adjusts the Lifecycle Position™ to a minimum stage based on industry consensus. This prevents misclassification when the temporal window is short or the dataset underestimates maturity.
When a prior is applied, a transparency flag MATURITY_PRIOR_APPLIED is displayed in the report so you always know when an adjustment was made and why.
Signal Summary — plain-language layer
The 3-line summary at the top of every report is generated deterministically from verdict × lifecycle × momentum. There is no AI call involved — the text is templated and anchored on the scores. It is designed for non-experts and does not replace the full score analysis.
Key takeaways
- EP/US/PCT = comprehensive. CN/JP/KR = international filings only. IN/TR/BR = limited.
- Geographic gaps can impact all scores, especially Openness Score™ and Intelligence Grade™.
- The Explorer is sufficient for directional signals; premium upload is needed for full coverage.
QUIZ DE VALIDATION
1. Which patent offices are comprehensively covered by the Stratensight Explorer?
2. Why are domestic Chinese (CNIPA) patent filings often missing from Explorer analyses?
3. When should you consider uploading premium data instead of relying on the Explorer?
4. What does 'international filings only' mean for CN/JP/KR coverage in the Explorer?
5. How does geographic coverage impact the Openness Score™?
