The 5-level fallback system
When you type a technology name in the Explorer, Stratensight maps it to CPC codes through a 5-level fallback system. Each level tries a different mapping strategy, from most specific to most general.
Exact CPC match
Direct mapping to specific CPC subgroups. Best precision.
Broader CPC group
Falls back to parent CPC groups if exact match yields too few patents.
Related classifications
Expands to related CPC subclasses with semantic similarity.
Keyword-augmented
Combines CPC codes with keyword filters to refine scope.
Academic source fallback
Broadest scope — uses academic and open sources. Warning displayed.
The Source Coverage card
Every Explorer analysis displays a Source Coverage card that shows exactly which CPC codes were used, how many patents were retrieved, and the data source. Always check this card to verify the analysis scope.
Transparency principle: Stratensight never hides the analysis scope. The Source Coverage card gives IP professionals full visibility into how the technology perimeter was defined, so they can verify and refine as needed.
Automatic time window selection
The Explorer automatically suggests an analysis time window adapted to the technology maturity. You can override it at any time.
TIME WINDOW — AUTO-SELECTION BY MATURITY
Logic: More mature = shorter window (old patents = noise, not signal).
Manual options: 1y · 3y · 5y · 10y · all.
Key takeaways
- Stratensight maps your technology query to CPC codes through 5 fallback levels.
- The Source Coverage card shows exactly which CPC codes and data sources were used.
- Time window is auto-selected by maturity but can be overridden manually.
- Boolean mode gives IP professionals direct control over the CPC query scope.
QUIZ DE VALIDATION
1. How does Stratensight map a plain-language technology query to patent data?
2. Where can you verify which CPC codes were used in your Explorer analysis?
3. What happens if the system cannot find a specific CPC mapping for your technology query?
4. Why does CPC mapping quality matter for Stratensight scores?
5. In Boolean mode, what additional control does an IP professional get?
